Top 10 Most Hated Fan Bases in Sports
Most sports fans have developed a deep hatred for the fans of their rival teams, but every now and then, you encounter a fan base so terrible that they are just universally hated. Is it because they're too cocky in winning? Fair weather fans? Whatever the reason, here is a list of the sports world's most hated fan bases.
10. Buffalo Bills
You kind of feel bad for Bills fans, who suffered through 4 consecutive seasons losing in the Super Bowl in the 90s and haven’t made the playoffs in 14 years. But then you actually meet them, and stop feeling bad. This fan base starts off every season expecting a Super Bowl run despite a roster filled with mediocre players, and after the 1st loss of the season, they’re already talking about “next year”. It’s no wonder why they’re considering a move to Toronto! 9. Montreal Canadiens Generally regarded as the most rowdy fans in the NHL, the Canadiens have a reputation for making their home-ice a volatile place for visitors. They boo the U.S. national anthem, they riot in the streets and set fires after losses, and their own general manager even called them “gutless bastards”. It seems that nobody enjoys these guys, not even their own team. Image by sandler482 from Pixabay
8. Dallas Cowboys
After a win, they say Tony Romo is the best quarterback in the NFL. After a loss, they’re calling for him to be burned at the stake. These fans are still stuck in their glory days of the 90s, and if you ever get in an argument with one, they’re bound to bring up those Super Bowl wins. The truth is that they’re a very average team with an above-average payroll and unrealistic expectations. 7. Chicago Cubs Although the curse has finally been broken, baseball's lovable losers still very much deserve to be on this list. They blamed their own team’s poor performance on an innocent bystander who made a simple mistake, and quite literally ruined his life. Steve Bartman has gotten countless death threats, and to this day will not show his face in public. Cubs fans, let’s get real: your fan base just sucks. Image by Charlie Yoon from Pixabay
6. New York Yankees
For a team who essentially buys their championships from other teams, Yankees fans sure have a lot of pride. Everywhere across America you see Yankees “fans” representing their “team”, if you can even call this collection of overpaid jerks that. These are the same people who praised A-Rod every time he got a hit, yet booed him mercilessly and called him a cheater when he strikes out. Talk about fair-weather fans… 5. Philadelphia Eagles Known for tearing opposing fans and players apart, this is one ruthless fan base that you don’t want to mess with. Some of their career highlights include yelling profanities at Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin as he was carted off the field with a career-ending spinal cord injury, booing Santa Claus, and too many stadium brawls to count. Truly a special group of people. 4. Los Angeles Lakers Can you really even call it a fan base? Most of the audience at Lakers games consists of celebrities who couldn’t tell you the first thing about basketball. For arguably basketball's most storied franchise, the stands seem to be packed with fans who couldn't name a single Laker from before the Kobe Bryant era. Nowadays, the Lakers are a shambly silhouette of who they used to be, but miraculously even more unbearable. You can find a typical Laker fan screeching to opposing fans about how (insert name here) is the next Laker superstar. Bynum, D'Angelo, Randle, Clarkson, and perhaps worst of all, Lonzo Ball. 3. Cleveland Cavaliers A few years ago, they wouldn’t have even been worth mentioning. After LeBron left, many people actually felt bad for the Cavs. It was understandable to sympathize with Cavs fans after such an organization-crushing event, but all of that sympathy quickly faded away. After all of the jersey-burning, racism, and unfathomable amounts of hate towards the only guy who has made their entire city relevant in decades, it was a surprise LeBron ever came back. Now that the Cavs are relevant again, you can find Cavs fans being as unbearable as ever. Whenever the Cavs win, they claim they have the best team ever and will undoubtedly win the championship. When they lose, you can pick and choose from their list of excuses. "LeBron needs more help!" "The Warriors are just too stacked." "We need Anthony Davis!" 2. Kentucky Basketball Who remembers when John Calipari was the head basketball coach at Memphis? Wildcat fans tore him apart, calling him a liar and a cheater. Now that he’s their new coach, they worship him. A man who has had 2 Final Four appearances vacated due to NCAA violations, Calipari epitomizes the values of this fan base- win at all costs. This “one-and-done” program has quickly become the most hated in all of college basketball. 1. University of Alabama Football Only the worst fan base in all of sports could have a regular fan make nationwide sports headlines. In 2010, Harvey Updyke, a diehard Alabama fan, took it upon himself to poison the iconic oak trees at Auburn University, home of the Crimson Tide’s heated rivals. He went on to brag about it on a radio show, concluding with “Roll Damn Tide.” Don’t get this wrong; this isn’t just about one guy. He is merely a reflection of an entire group, one that holds national titles higher than education. This fan base is most certainly the cream of the crap. |
