10. Swarthmore College - Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
Swarthmore College possesses a charm unlike any other. Although it is known as one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the entire United States, you might not have heard of this stunning Pennsylvania college. Known for its elite academics as well as its beauty, Swarthmore is about as well-balanced of an institution as it gets.
The school was founded in 1864, but possesses a modernity about it thanks to its socially-conscious and progressive approach to maintaining its landscaping and architecture. For example, three of the roofs have been converted to be green, and we don’t mean green as in just environmentally-friendly. We mean literally green, with grass and plants growing on them, creating for a unique approach towards sustainability.
Yeah, you definitely don't see that on every college campus. Right now, a fourth building is currently in the process of its roof being green-ified. You go, Swarthmore.
9. College of the Atlantic - Bar Harbor, Maine
As the name suggests, this college is right on the beautiful Maine coast of the Atlantic Ocean. However, this isn’t the only thing that earns it a spot on this list. College of the Atlantic has forests, orchards, and farmlands making the campus the complete package. With all this natural beauty, it is also understandable that College of the Atlantic does whatever it can to preserve the beauty they’ve been blessed with, reaching impressive levels of sustainability in the process.
