6. Jane Toppan
Jane Toppan was a nurse in Massachusetts. While there are numerous cases of nurses and doctors being serial “mercy” killers, Toppan was not one of these cases. She experimented with medical substances and doses, using her patients as guinea pigs. Upon her capture, she claimed to get a sexual thrill from killing patients, bringing them back to life and killing them again. She stated that she would hold her victims close as they died for sexual satisfaction. Confessing to 33 killings, Toppan is one of the most prolific female serial killers in history. She stated her ambition to be “to have killed more people – helpless people – than any man or woman who ever lived.” Aside from her murders as a nurse, she also poisoned her landlords, killed her foster sister with strychnine, killed an elderly man and his two daughters, and possibly more.
