David Palmer
In the latest edition of “Leonardo DiCaprio’s Attempt to Finally Win an Oscar,” the actor slept in animal carcasses and ate raw bison liver for his role in “The Revenant.” So that got us thinking: what are the craziest things actors have done to get into character for and during a film? Does Leo even come close to the most insane? Well enough rhetorical questions, let’s get right to it!

1. Daniel Day-Lewis: Everything
Everyone knows DDL is a method actor (it has given him the distinction of being the only man to win three Best Actor Oscars) but I don’t think some fully comprehend and appreciate how in-depth he takes his roles. For “My Left Foot” (which won him his first Academy Award), Day-Lewis played paralyzed painter Christy Brown. During shooting, he refused to leave his wheelchair, and had (likely very angry) crew members spoon feed him his meals, otherwise he would not eat. Since that role won him an Academy Award, he obviously thought he’d give the method acting thing another go, and while shooting “The Crucible” he refused to bathe while filming the movie. He also BUILT A HOUSE WITH 17TH CENTURY TOOLS AND LIVED IN IT. After all that, he didn’t get an Oscar, but that wasn’t going to stop old Danny Boy. For “Lincoln” (guess which character he played), Day-Lewis did not break character for three months and made everyone on set, including the great Steven Spielberg, address him as “Mr. President.” It’s no wonder the guy only takes roles every three years.
