3. Rue, The Hunger Games
With 24 participants and only one (two in this case) victor, the Hunger Games are brutal and depressing. Of nearly two dozen deaths, this one was the saddest. Katniss' very young friend and ally gets murdered, and Katniss' following actions set in motion the revolutionary events.
