Could Obi-Wan Kenobi Be Rey's Father?
(SPOILERS AHEAD)

By Eli Solidum
December 27th, 2015

For some reason, the biggest question in the aftermath The Force Awakens has been “who is Rey’s father?” The original trilogy dropped the biggest plot twist on us when Darth Vader revealed himself to be Luke’s father, and now everyone is going crazy over who Rey’s father is. Everyone wants to be able to say “I told you so” when Luke or Han or Jar Jar Binks turns out to be Rey’s father. However, while Luke is the most obvious choice, and even Han has a sliver of possibility of being her father, people are now pointing to the Kenobi formerly known as Obi-Wan as the prime suspect. While it is yet to be determined (if ever, because let’s face it, is Rey’s father really integral to the story?) we came up with a case arguing for and against Obi-Wan as the father.

Possibility 3 of 3:
Obi-Wan was her grandfather

Picture this. Obi-Wan finds a lover and has a child shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Let’s say he’s around 40 when he has a child, meaning that when he dies in A New Hope, that child is pushing 20. That child could have left home already, found a job, or became a bounty hunter or something. That explains why we never actually meet Obi-Wan’s kid in the original trilogy, and it’s not like Obi-Wan had much reason to bring up this child.

The masterminds behind Star Wars could easily take this slight chink in the armor and take advantage of it to write Rey as a descendant of Obi-Wan. After Obi-Wan’s death, his child could have hidden Rey away to keep her safe, fearing for her safety as a Kenobi. Obi-Wan’s kid could have died, which explains why Rey has been abandoned and alone for so long. It makes more sense that Rey is in her 30’s than in her 50’s. Obi-Wan’s kid could also have survived the original trilogy and just died in the 30 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. It makes sense. Obi-Wan’s force sensitivity, fighting style, and British accent have been inherited by Rey. While I hate to break it to many of you, Obi-Wan is not the father, but he could very well be the grandfather.
