Plot Twist: Kylo Ren Is The Good Guy
(SPOILERS AHEAD)

By Eli Solidum
January 4th, 2016

If you, for some reason, still have not seen The Force Awakens, then something is wrong with you. This goes without saying, but there will be spoilers ahead.

It seems like we have heard every theory there is about The Force Awakens by now, but new ones keep popping up. From those theories, even more theories branch off, and eventually, the theories are just absolutely absurd. But the theory that Kylo Ren is actually a hero? It just might have more than a little sliver of truth, but it is dependent on one major theory being true. Luke Skywalker is Rey’s father. Now this has not been confirmed, but unless it is a red herring to throw audiences off, all signs point to Rey continuing the Skywalker bloodline.

Let’s look at three major reasons how Kylo Ren could be the good guy.

Picture
1. "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine”
Ben Kenobi says this in A New Hope before Vader kills him, and we have already seen many parallels between A New Hope and The Force Awakens. In the climax of the movie, Han and Ren face off for the final time. While the focus is on father and son, Rey watches from a distance, similar to how Luke watched Kenobi and Vader’s final battle. Han Solo, who Rey was beginning to see as a father figure, meets his tragic end. Think back to the Kenobi quote. He knew Luke was watching, and he knew his sacrifice would drive Luke to save the galaxy. In this instance, Han Solo was focused on saving his son, not inspiring Rey, but what about Kylo? What if he wanted to inspire Rey to save the galaxy, knowing that he was already too corrupted by the dark side to return to the light. Han Solo’s final plea to his son may have briefly brought some light back to Ren, giving him time for one final selfless act to motivate Rey to save the galaxy. Han Solo’s era of heroics is long-gone, but Rey’s is just beginning.

If Ren did save Rey in the initial Jedi academy massacre, it shows that the conflicted villain had a soft spot for her. Throughout the entire movie, Ren does not intend to murder Rey, only wanting to train her or join forces with her. By murdering Han, he pushes the pure-hearted Rey further towards the light side and becoming the hero the galaxy needs. Is this theory too far-fetched? What do you think?
